For the very first time in the history of fistball, a South African team will participate in a World Cup. This year’s men’s World Cup will take place in Argentina in November. Since the South African team is not a professional team, they have to raise the money for their trip to Argentina themselves. To do this, they have launched a crowdfunding campaign and come up with different ideas to raise awareness for it.
One of these ideas was to “challenge” the world’s best fistball hitter, Patrick Thomas of the German national team in a funny video. Patrick Thomas responded immediately with a short video of his own accepting their challenge. The IFA media comission talked to Patrick Thomas about this challenge, the World Cup, and his advice for new teams.
Hello Patrick. We are catching up with you shortly before your trip to Berlin. Are you going there for fistball practice?
No, I am just going to visit my teammate Lukas Schubert.
There is a viral video going around on the internet where the South African fistball team “challenges” you directly. How did you respond to that?
I will obviously take them up on their challenge. I also think this is a fun way to raise awareness of the crowdfunding the African team is doing for the trip to the World Cup. I am really looking forward to meeting them in Argentina. Ideas like these are great because it really gets people’s attention. There should be more fistball players out there who are not afraid to make bold statements like the South African players did in their video.
What do you know about the fistball players from South Africa?
I don’t know very much about them. I only know that they founded their fistball federation very recently, and that the players are very ambitious, motivated and have a good sense of humor.
The Pan Am Games just ended. Brazil won, coming out ahead of Chile, the US and Colombia. Were you able to watch the Games online and study your future opponents via live stream?
During the Pan Am Games, I had a workshop with the national team. We did take a quick look, though. There is still some time until the World Cup. A lot can change before then.
India, Pakistan, South Africa, Australia and Colombia will participate for the first time in a World Cup. What kind of advice would you give these teams?
The only thing I can recommend is to have fun at the games, and to enjoy the very special atmosphere. As a fistball player, you don’t get to experience a World Cup that often.
Dear Patrick, please go easy on your challengers: they probably don’t know what they’re up against.
I will have to think about that. All I can say is, don’t dish it out if you can’t take it!

Erstmals nimmt die Faustball Nationalmannschaft aus Südafrika an einer Weltmeisterschaft teil. Die Faustball Weltmeisterschaft der Herren findet diesen November in Argentinien statt. Um als reine Amateurmannschaft die Reise auch finanzieren zu können, hat das Südafrikanische Team ein Crowdfunding initiiert und macht mit verschiedenen Aktionen darauf aufmerksam. Hallo Patrick, wir erwischen dich grad noch kurz vor deiner Reise nach Berlin. Geht’s zum Faustball-Training?
Nein, ich besuche dort meinen Nationalmannschaftskollegen Lukas Schubert.
Zurzeit verbreitet sich ein Video, indem von den Südafrikanischen Faustballern „herausgefordert“ wirst, wie ein Lauffeuer. Wie gefällt dir das?
Die Herausforderung der Südafrikaner nehme ich natürlich gerne an. Ich finde das eine lustige Art um auf das Crowdfunding für die Reisekosten aufmerksam zu machen. Ich freue mich sehr auf das Treffen in Argentinien. Ich finde solche Aktionen klasse. So was steigert die Aufmerksamkeit. Es sollten sich ruhig mehr Faustballer mit derartigen Ansagen trauen.
Was weisst Du über die Faustballer aus Südafrika?
Über die Faustballer aus Südafrika weiß ich nicht viel. Mir ist bekannt, dass der Verband neu gegründet wurde und die Leute (siehe Video) sehr ehrgeizig, motiviert und lustig sind.
Vor kurzem sind die Pan Am Games zu Ende gegangen. Brasilen gewann vor Chile, USA und Kolumbien. Hast Du deine zukünftigen Gegner im Live-Stream studiert?
Während der Pan Am Games fand ein Nationalmannschaft-Lehrgang statt. Wir haben mal kurz reingeschaut. Bis zur WM ist ja auch noch eine Weile hin. Da kann sich noch einiges verändern.
Indien, Pakistan, Südafrika, Australien und Kolumbien nehmen erstmals an einer WM teil. Was für einen Ratschlag würdest Du diesen Teams auf den Weg geben.
Das einzige, was ich den neuen Teams raten kann, ist Spaß bei den Spielen zu haben und die besondere Atmosphäre zu genießen. Eine WM erlebt man als Faustballer nicht so oft.
Lieber Patrick, sei nett zu deinen Herausforderern, die können sich vermutlich gar nicht vorstellen, welcher Hammer du auspacken kannst.
