IFA: Hallo Karl, über die SportAccord Convention wurde viel in den Sportmedien geschrieben. Aber was bedeutet eigentlich «SportAccord»?
Karl Weiss: Die SportAccord Convention ist der wichtigste jährliche Event der weltweiten Sportverbände. Bis vor wenigen Jahren war SportAccord unter dem Namen General Association of International Sports Federations, GAISF bekannt. SportAccord ist die zentrale Dachorganisation der internationalen Sportverbände. Insgesamt gehören über 110 Organisationen (olympische und nicht-olympische Sportarten) dazu, darunter auch Sportfachverbände wie die International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) oder die Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), aber auch Sportorganisationen mit speziellen Aufgabenbereichen wie die IInternational Worldgames Association (IWGA), nicht jedoch das Internationale Olympische Komittee (IOC ). Seit der Aufnahme des Motorsportverbandes FIA in 2013 gehören alle bedeutenden Sportverbände SportAccord an. SportAccord darf daher als höchstes Gremium des Weltsports betrachtet werden.
IFA: Besondere Beachtung fand die Unterzeichnung einer Vereinbarung zwischen dem IOC und der Alliance of Independent Recognised Members of Sport (AIMS) um was ging es da?
Karl: Innerhalb von Sport Accord gibt es folgende vier Dachorganisationen. Die Association of Summer Olympic International Federations (ASOIF), die Association of International Olympic Winter Sports Federations (AIOWF), die Association of IOC Recognised International Sports Federations (ARISF) und die AIMS, bei der ich Mitte August letzten Jahres als Direktor in den Vorstand der gewählt wurde. Zur AIMS gehört auch die International Fistball Association.
Im Rahmen der SportAccord Convention wurde ein Memorandum of Understanding, also eine Grundsatzvereinbarung zwischen dem IOC und der AIMS unterzeichnet. Das IOC erkennt damit AIMS als führende Sportorganisation und Unterstützer der Olympischen Bewegung an. Das ist ein wichtiger Meilenstein für die 23 Sportverbände die unter der AIMS organisiert sind.
IFA: Was bedeutet dies für die olympische Anerkennung des Faustballsports?
Karl: Die Anerkennung der AIMS ist ein wichtiger Schritt für unseren Sport und hilft bei unseren Bemühungen als IFA die IOC-Anerkennung zu bekommen. Im Mai ist nun der erste Abgabetermin für die Unterlagen zum IOC Recognition Process, die nächsten Wochen haben wir alle Hände voll zu tun.
IFA: Welche weiteren wichtigen Momente gab es in Lausanne?
Karl: Zusammen mit unserem Generalsekretär Jörn Verleger habe ich viele wichtige Gespräch führen können, so zum Beispiel mit den Verantwortlichen der kommenden World Games Veranstaltungen, die 2017 in Polen und 2021 in den USA stattfinden, oder mit einem Vertreter des Sportministeriums aus China, wie wir Faustball weiter promoten können. Wichtig waren auch die Gespräche mit den anderen Sportverbänden und die Präsentation des Faustballsports durch Jörn Verleger am «Speakers Corner».
IFA:Was sind die nächsten wichtigen Termine in deiner Agenda als Präsident der IFA?
Karl: Ich freue mich auf die kommenden internationalen Faustball-Events, seien es die U18-Weltmeisterschaft in Nürnberg-Eibach in Deutschland, die Männer EM in Grieskirchen in Österreich, die Frauen-WM in Pomerode in Brasilien oder auch die verschiedenen internationalen Vereinswettbewerbe. Besonders gespannt bin ich auf dem IFA Men’s Fistball World Cup der erstmals in Kapstadt, Südafrika Mitte Oktober ausgetragen wird. Dort sollte auch die Gründung eines afrikanischen Kontinentalverbandes stattfinden. Geplant sind im Oktober auch die Asia Fistball Games in Pakistan mit der Gründung des Kontinentalverbandes Asien/Australien und Ozeanien.

IFA: Karl, sports media covered the SportAccord Convention extensively, but what does SportAccord actually mean?
Karl Weiss: The SportAccord Convention is the most important event of the year for international sports federations. Until recently, SportAccord was known by the name General Association of International Sports Federations (GAIF). SportAccord is the central umbrella association for the international sports federations. A total of 110 organizations (Olympic and non-Olympic sports) are part of this association, including professional organizations such as the International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) and the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), but also sports organizations with very specific tasks such as the International Worldgames Association (IWGA). The International Olympic Committee (IOC), however, is not part of it. Since the International Automobile Federation (FIA) became a member in 2013, all important sports federations are part of SportAccord. In that sense, one can say that SportAccord is the greatest committee for sports in the world.
IFA: One event that received a lot of attention during the SportAccord Convention was the signing of an agreement between the IOC and the Alliance of Independent Recognised Members of Sport (AIMS). What was that about?
Karl: There are four umbrella organizations within SportAccord: Association of Summer Olympic International Federations (ASOIF), Association of International Olympic Winter Sports Federations (AIOWF), Association of IOC Recognised International Sports Federations (ARISF), and AIMS, of which I was elected director of the board in August, 2015. The International Fistball Association is a member of AIMS.
During the SportAccord Convention, the IOC and AIMS signed a Memorandum of Understanding, which means that IOC recognizes AIMS as a leading sports organization and supporter of the Olympic movement. This is an important milestone for the 23 sports federations that are organized under AIMS.
IFA: What does this mean for the recognition of fistball as an Olympic sport?
Karl: The recognition of AIMS is an important step for our sport, and it helps the International Fistball Association in being recognized by the IOC. Our first application deadline for the IOC recognition process is in May, so we will be very busy in the next few weeks.
IFA: What other important moments were there in Lausanne?
Karl: Together with IFA Secretary General Jörn Verleger, we were able to have many important talks. For example, we talked with the organizers of the upcoming World Games events that will take place in Poland in 2017 and in the US in 2021, and we also talked with a Chinese representative about how to promote fistball. Other important events were also our talks with other sports federations and Jörn Verleger’s presentation of fistball at the “Speaker’s Corner.“
IFA: What are the next important dates in your agenda as IFA president?
Karl: I am looking forward to many of the upcoming international fistball events, such as the U18 World Championships in Nürmberg-Eibach in Germany; the Fistball Men’s European Championship in Grieskirchen, Austria; the Fistball Women’s World Championship in Pomerode, Brazil; or the different international club competitions. I am really excited about the IFA Men’s Fistball World Cup, which will take place for the first time in Capetown, South Africa in mid-October. This will probably go along with the foundation of a continental African fistball federation. In October, the Asia Fistball Games will take place in Pakistan, with a respective foundation of a continental Asia / Australia and Oceania fistball federation.
