We met Christian Kläner, former captain of the german fistball team, for an interview to ask about the world cup and his retirement.
IFA: Christian, at first congratulations for defending the title as world champion. You justiced your role as favorite absolutely, but nobody expected that it would be that clear. You lost no set and didn’t go in only one single overtime. 11:9 was the tightest result in the whole world cup. How is that possible? Are you simply one class above the others?
Kläner: Hi, thank you very much. Winning the world cup without losing a set, nobody of us ourselves could expect. It is the result of a great preparation. In this year our investment was pretty high. But even the quality of the single training sessions was at the highest limit every time. I said it in an interview directly after the final, it was the very best team I have ever played in. Of course preferential in the strength of the team, but also the spirit und the complete handling with the others was quite amazing. To come back to your question: yes, we were on level better than the rest. But of course it is only a snap-shot and can change in the next two to four years easily.
IFA: After the world cup you went to the Copacabana in rio as team (except the coach). So we can say the atmosphere in the team was pretty well? Is it true, that it was a spontaneous decision?
Kläner: The atmosphere was sensational of course but it isn’t hard to enjoy lying at the Copacabana with a Caipirinha in the hand and a medal around the neck. It was the perfect conclusion for an exciting and very special fistball-year. But we planed the trip some months ago, so we could focus complete for the world cup.
IFA: Finally you went home. How was the tune in brettorf? How have you been welcomed?
Kläner: In Brettorf around 100 people were waiting for me at the train station with flags, fireworks and lot of applaus. I expected a little reception, but of course not in this size. It was fantastic!! Many thanks from this position for that to Brettorf
IFA: You aren’t the only team which starts in the Bundesliga a little bit later. The national player have only some days for the acclimatization. Will this be a thing in the following season? Could this be at least a factor to overturn Pfungstadt, who are hidden hard by this?
Kläner: No, I don’t think so. The power balance will almost be the same. Perhaps it is a bit harder for Pfungstadt, but latest at the german championschip they will be full in shape and then it will be very hard to defeat them.
IFA: After the world cup you and Michi Marx handed in your resignation. With that you followed in Sascha Balls footsteps. Four years captain, won everything, thank you and bye? Or did you know before that you will do this step after the world cup? Tell us your motivations.
Kläner: This decision I did before the European championship in 2014. It is obviously that some day it’s over and the younger players will get better. I think to retire in the year of a world cup is perfect, because so the national coaches have time to build up the perfect team for the next championship. For me personally it is a great feeling to end up by winning the world cup again.
IFA: Have you already found a follower? How will this decision be done? Is there a voting or is it determined by the coach? When you look in the clubs, you have many captains in the national team (You, Fabian Sagstetter, Steve Schmutzler…).
Kläner: The new captain will be called by the coaches – so it was in my case. I think at the beginning of the new year they will hold some conversations and after the decision is made it will be published.
IFA: And our last question: How will you follow the next tournaments? Assistant Coach? Visitor? Introducing for the next national coach? Or won’t you at all? Any plans?
Kläner: I didn’d made concrete plans, but of course I will try to support the team. At least I looked for flights to Salzburg, to take part at the European championship in Grieskirchen next year.

Interview mit Christian Kläner – Weltmeister und ehemaliger Mannschaftsführer der Deutschen Nationalmannschaft
Wir haben Christian Kläner, ehemaliger Kapitän der deutschen Nationalmannschaft, zum Interview getroffen um ihn zur WM und seinem Rücktritt zu befragen.
IFA: Christian, zunächst herzlichen Glückwunsch zur Titelverteidigung. Ihr seid eurer Favoritenrolle absolut gerecht geworden, aber dass es so einseitig wird hat wohl niemand erwartet. Keinen Satz abgegeben, noch nicht einmal in eine Satzverlängerung gemusst. 11:9 war der knappste Satz der ganzen WM. Wie geht so etwas? Seid ihr derzeit einfach eine Klasse besser als der Rest der Welt?
Kläner: Hallo, vielen Dank für die Glückwünsche! Dass wir die WM, ohne einen Satz abzugeben, gewinnen würden, hätte von uns im Vorfeld niemand gedacht. Es ist aber das Resultat einer hervorragenden Vorbereitung. In diesem Jahr war der Aufwand immens hoch. Aber auch die Qualität der Trainingsleistungen bei den einzelnen Maßnahmen war jedes Mal am oberen Limit. Ich habe es ja auch schon direkt nach dem Endspiel in einem Interview gesagt, dass das die beste Mannschaft war, in der ich jemals gespielt habe. Natürlich vorrangig bezogen auf die Leistungsstärke des Teams, aber auch die Stimmung und der gesamte Umgang miteinander war sensationell. Um auf deine Frage zurück zu kommen: Ja, in diesem Jahr waren wir eine Klasse stärker als unsere Konkurrenz. Das ist aber natürlich nur eine Momentaufnahme und kann sich in zwei bis vier Jahren wieder ganz schnell ändern.
IFA: Ihr seid danach geschlossen als Team (mit Ausnahme des Trainers, der in Chile noch eine WM vor sich hatte) nach Rio an die Copacabana gefahren. Man kann also davon ausgehen, dass die Stimmung innerhalb des Teams super war? Stimmt es, dass das mehr eine spontane Aktion war?
Kläner: Die Stimmung war in der Tat super. An der Copacabana lässt es sich ja mit der Goldmedaille um den Hals und einem Caipirinha in der Hand ganz gut aushalten 😉 Es war einfach der krönende Abschluss eines aufregenden und ganz speziellen Faustballjahres. Die Anschlussreise haben wir allerdings bereits vor einigen Monaten gebucht, so dass wir uns komplett auf die WM konzentrieren konnten.
IFA: Dann ging es doch nach Hause. Wie war die Stimmung in Brettorf? Wie wurdest du empfangen?
Kläner: In Brettorf wurde ich am Bahnhof von ca. 100 Leuten mit Deutschlandfahnen, Feuerwerk und viel Beifall empfangen. Mit einem kleinen Empfang hatte ich ja im Vorfeld gerechnet, aber natürlich nicht in dieser Größenordnung. Das war fantastisch!! An dieser Stelle auch nochmal viele Dank dafür nach Brettorf
IFA: Jetzt seid ihr nicht das einzige Team das erst jetzt in die Bundesliga einsteigt. Die Nationalspieler haben quasi keine Eingewöhnung. Wird das in der diesjährigen Bundesligasaison eine Rolle spielen? Können dadurch vielleicht sogar die in diesem Fall schwer getroffenen Pfungstädter stürzen?
Kläner: Nein das wird keine große Rolle spielen. Die Kräfteverhältnisse werden meiner Meinung nach die gleichen bleiben. Die Pfungstädter werden sich anfangs vielleicht etwas schwerer tun als sonst, aber spätestens bei der DM in Hamm werden sie ihre Bestform abrufen können und dann sind sie ganz schwer zu schlagen.
IFA: Jetzt hast du nach der WM zusammen mit Michi Marx deinen Rücktritt verkündet. Damit trittst du in die Fußstapfen von deinem Vorgänger Sascha Ball (nur dass du ein Jahr jünger bist). 4 Jahre Kapitän, alles gewonnen was es gibt, danke und tschüss? Oder wusstest du schon vorher, dass nach der WM Schluss sein wird? Erzähl mal, wie kam es zu dieser Entscheidung?
Kläner: Die Entscheidung nach der WM aus der Nationalmannschaft zurückzutreten, ist bereits vor der EM 2014 gefallen. Es ist doch klar, dass irgendwann mal Schluss sein muss, bzw. die jüngeren Spieler leistungsmäßig aufrücken werden. Ich denke nach einem WM-Jahr aufzuhören, ist der richtige Weg, denn dann hat das Trainerteam wieder ein paar Jahre Zeit, um das perfekte Team für die nächste WM zu formieren. Und für mich persönlich ist es auch ein schönes Gefühl auf dem faustballerischen Höhepunkt meine Zeit in der Nationalmannschaft zu beenden.
IFA: Steht schon ein Nachfolger fest? Wie wird der eigentlich bestimmt? Gibt es eine Abstimmung oder sagt der Trainer was Sache ist? Wenn man in die Vereine schaut sind schließlich einige Kapitäne in der Nationalmannschaft (Du, Fabian Sagstetter, Steve Schmutzler…)
Kläner: Der neue Kapitän wird vom Trainerteam bestimmt – so war es zumindest bei mir. Ich denke, da wird es zu Beginn des Jahres die entsprechenden Gespräche geben und nach der Entscheidung wird dann die Öffentlichkeit vermutlich auch irgendwann informiert werden.
IFA: Zu guter Letzt: Wie wirst du die nächsten Turniere verfolgen? Co-Trainer, Zuschauer oder gar nicht? Oder zum Einarbeiten zum nächsten Bundestrainer? Hast du schon irgendwelche Pläne?
Kläner: Konkrete Pläne habe ich nicht gemacht. Selbstverständlich werde ich aber die Nationalmannschaft so gut es geht unterstützen. Ich habe mir sogar schon die Flüge nach Salzburg rausgesucht, um bei der EM in Grieskirchen dabei zu sein.
