Haben Sie jemals davon gehört, dass in Pakistan Faustball gespielt wird? Der 24-jährige Zubair Hassan hat früher Volleyball gespielt und reist nun für Pakistan als Angreifer zum WM nach Argentinien. Er erzählt uns in diesem Interview über die Faustballstrukturen in Pakistan, wie er zum Sport kam und warum er denkt, dass Pakistan eine Chance hat den WM-Titel zu gewinnen.
IFA: Hallo Zubair, du bist einer der Spieler die für Pakistan an der Herren Weltmeisterschaft im November 2015 in Argentinien teilnehmen wird. Wie sieht es mit den Vorbereitungen aus, seid ihr bereit um bei diesem großen Turnier um Siege zu kämpfen?
Zubair Hassan: Wir sind bereit alles zu geben und freuen uns schon sehr auf das Turnier in Argentinien. Alle Spieler wissen wie wichtig dieses Turnier ist und wir trainieren sehr hart, um für die WM in Bestform zu sein.
IFA: Pakistan hat bisher noch nie an einer WM teilgenommen, der Faustballsport dürfte noch keine lange Tradition im Land haben. Wie viele Spieler spielen bei euch regelmäßig Faustball?
Zubair: Unser Präsident des Faustballverbandes, Muhammad Usman, ist sehr darum bemüht den Sport in Pakistan weiter zu verbreiten und arbeitet mit Hochdruck daran Faustball in Bildungseinrichtungen zu etablieren. Mittlerweile wird in vielen Schulen, Universitäten und auch auf Vereinsebene gespielt. Ich denke, dass Faustball bei uns viel Potential für die Zukunft hat. Für die WM wurden bei einem Trainingslager 20 Spieler ausgewählt die nun regelmäßig miteinander trainieren.
IFA: Wie kam es nun dazu, dass ihr begonnen habt Faustball zu spielen? Die meisten von uns würden eher an Cricket oder Tennis denken, wenn von Sport in Pakistan die Rede ist. Erzähl uns mal davon wie du zum Faustball gekommen bist.
Zubair: Also zum ersten Mal wurde Faustball beim Punjab Internation Youth Festival gespielt. Dann hat die lokale Sportbehörde (Punjab Sports Board) mit der Promotion für Faustball begonnen und in diesem Zuge wurden auch die ersten Asien Meisterschaften in Lahore ausgerichtet.Ich persönlich habe zuerst Volleyball gespielt und weil sich die Sportarten so ähnlich sind wurde ich dann auch ins Faustballteam einberufen. Ich war Teil der Mannschaft sowohl beim International Youth Festival als auch bei den Asien Meisterschaften. Mittlerweile bin ich verrückt nach Faustball.
IFA: Ihr habt die Asien Meisterschaften 2014 dann auch gewonnen. Was sind eure Ziele bzw. eure Erwartungen für die Weltmeisterschaft in Córdoba? Auch Südafrika und Australien sind unter anderem zu ersten Mal dabei, wie schätzt du eure Chancen ein?
Zubair: Wir sind amtierender Asienmeister und freuen uns schon sehr darauf unser Können auch bei der WM zu zeigen. Bei der Kontinentalmeisterschaft haben wir Australien bereits deutlich besiegt. Unsere Erwartungen sind sehr hoch und wir wollen zeigen, dass unser Team eine Chance hat um den WM-Titel mitzuspielen.
IFA: Das sind aber sehr hohe Erwartungen dafür, dass ihr zum ersten Mal am Start seid.
Zubair: Ja, es ist ein hochgestecktes Ziel, aber wir werden alles geben um vorne mit dabei zu sein, ich hoffe wir können einen Platz unter den ersten fünf Mannschaften belegen.
IFA: Wo siehst du den Faustball in Pakistan in 5 Jahren?
Zubair: Der Verband pusht die Entwicklung in Schulen und Universitäten und auch die Teilnahme der Nationalmannschaft an der WM wird einen positiven Effekt für den Sport in unserem Land haben. Wie ich bereits erwähnt habe, ich denke Faustball hat in Pakistan eine rosige Zukunft vor sich.
IFA: Also das sind ja sehr gute Aussichten. Wir wünschen euch Alles Gute für die WM in Argentinien.

“We want to prove that our team has the ability to win the World Championship”
Have you ever heard of fistball being played in Pakistan? The former volleyball player Zubair Hassan (24) tells us about the structures in Asia, how he got to the sport of fistball and why he thinks that Pakistan has a chance to win the World Cup.
IFA: Hello Zubair, you are one of the Pakistani fistball players that are going to participate at the Men’s World Championships in Argentina in November 2015. How are the preparations going, are you ready to compete at the big tournament?
Zubair Hassan: All the players are ready to compete and are looking forward to this big tournament. We know about the importance of this competition and are working hard to be in the best shape for the tournament.
IFA: Pakistan has never appeared in the Wold Cup before, so I guess the fistball tradition in your country is not that old. How many players are training on a regular basis?
Zubair: Our honourable sir, secretary of the fistball federation of Pakistan, Mr. Muhammad Usman, is having keen interest in fistball and is working hard to promote fistball in our country. The game has been launched at colleges, universities and also on club level. So I thinks the future of Fistball is looking bright in Pakistan. For the World Cup a training camp was held and now 20 players are training on a regular basis.
IFA: So how comes sportsmen in Pakistan started to play fistball? Most of the foreign people might think about cricket or other racket sports when being asked about Pakistani sport. Please tell us your personal story how you got to that sport.
Zubair: The sport was first introduced at the International Youth Festival in Pakistan. Then the Punjab Sports Board started to promote the sport and so they held the 1st Asian Fistball Championships for this purpose. I played in a Volleyball team and because fistball and volleyball have a similar playing elements, I was also selected for the fistball training camp. So I made it to the team for the International Youth Festival and the Asia Cup. You can say that I’m crazy for the game of Fistball now.
IFA: You already won the Asian Cup back in 2014. What are the expectations/the goals for the World Championships, as there are also other new Associations like Australia or South Africa who are competing for the first time? Please rate your chances.
Zubair: You know we are already Asian Champs, so we are looking forward to show our skills at the World Championship. At the Asian Games we already outplayed the Australians. Our expectations are very high and we want to prove that our team has the ability to win the World Championship.
IFA: That are quite ambitious aims for the first participation.
Zubair: Yes I know, it’s not easy, but we will struggle to win the title. It’s really important for us and if we can’t reach that goal, I hope we will rank among the five best teams.
IFA: Where do you see fistball in Pakistan in 5 years?
Zubair: Pakistan Fistball Federation is already promoting fistball in colleges and universities. And also the international appearance of our team will have an impact on the sport in our country. So as I already said, the future of Fistball is looking bright in Pakistan.
IFA: Well, that are good prospects. We wish you the best of luck for the tournament in Argentina.
